TECHMART NET DESIGNS

Definitions

We must assume since you're visiting our web site that you have some familiarity with the world wide web. If you're new to the web or are unfamiliar with some of the terms we're using here, we've defined some of the words or phrases we think will help you understand the world wide web a little better. And, of course, we're always available to help with any other aspect of this new technology that is unfamiliar to you.

URL
A "URL" is, essentially, your "address" on the Web. Your address is the specific set of letters, numbers, and periods (usually pronounced "dot" when telling someone your address) that people use to access your page. For example, let's look at a fictional address, "http://techmart.com/yourcompany/". We can break that address down into three main parts:
  1. http:// This indicates that your address is for a web page. "http" is an acronym for "Hyper-Text Transfer Protocol", which is the method used to transfer data on the internet as a web site.
  2. techmart.com This part of the address is known as the "domain". It indicates the home of the web site. In this case, techmart.com is the domain of TechMart Net Designs. The first part of the name is the name of the domain and the second part is the type of domain. For instance, ".com" is for commercial domains, ".gov" is for government domains, and ".org" is for organizations.
  3. yourcompany/ This part of the address, "yourcompany/", is a subdirectory tree set up to house all of the files associated with your page(s)
Page
A "Page" is an inadequate term used to describe a single document with a single address. This document can include text, graphics, and even full motion video and sound.

Site
A "Web Site" is the traditional term for a collection of "Pages", which we call, usually dedicated to or involving a single topic or related topics.

Why Should I Advertise On the Web?

  1. It's Cost Effective. A half page black and yellow ad in the yellow pages reaches, depending on the area, approximately 350,000 potential customers and costs $17,463 per year. On the world wide web, a full color page with four-color graphics and pictures custom designed to meet your need by Global Net Designs can reach over 32 million (and growing daily) potential customers and can cost as little as $450 per year.

  2. You can provide more information. A print or radio ad is quite limited in the amount of space or time allocated for each ad. A web site, on the other hand, presents a great deal more information about your business, since the basic size is so affordable and additional space is also remarkably inexpensive.

  3. You can reduce your print advertisement costs. If you're like most businesses, it's not likely that you'll abandon your print advertising, but having a web site can allow you to use smaller, less expensive ads to great advantage by including your web address in each print ad. In this way, customers wanting additional information are directed to your web site where substantially more information is waiting for them.

  4. It will improve your businesses' image. Having a web site and including your web address in all of your additional advertising has the added benefit of improving your businesses' image as a technologically advanced organization.

  5. You can extend your business hours. Web sites are open 24 hours a day. This allows potential customers to obtain information, peruse your catalogue of products and services, and even order online, even when your office or store is closed.
